Older Age classes
The benefits of exercise are not restricted to people that have full mobility, in fact, it’s even more important for the elderly. The process of ageing and lack of physical activity can lead to less independence, more visits to the doctor, more hospitalizations, a greater risk of falls and more use of medicines for a variety of illnesses.
Research has demonstrated that the older person with certain clinical and age related conditions will benefit from regular exercise and help to maintain good heart health and quality of life through better functional strength, mobility, balance, coordination as well as improved confidence and quality of life through improved independence:
Difficulty in walking and activities of daily living
High blood pressure
Balance problems
Heart disease
Weight issues
Diabetes
Arthritis
COPD
As well as the physical benefits there are also important psychological ones. Through exercise, our body releases endorphins which energise our mood, can ease depression, relieve stress and anxiety, enhance self-esteem, ultimately improve outlook on life, enhancing the later years in life and triggering an overall sense of well-being.
Mobility Moments
This is a fun and sociable 45 minute rhythmical seated exercise session consisting of a series of seated repetitive movements to a steady rhythm using appropriate music from the participants era. Chair-bound exercises are ideal for people with mobility issues such as weight problems and frail seniors with a greater risk of falls.
This session will deliver chair based exercises and activities that will safely and progressively raise the participants heart rate, improve oxygen flow around the body having a positive effect on cardiovascular fitness, functional activities using body movements and flexibands will improve strength and flexibility, mobilise stiff joints, improve coordination, stability and balance. Over time there should be an improvement in posture and reduce pain; chair exercise can also help alleviate body sores caused by sitting in the same position for long periods.
